Dental Implants in Woodbridge, VA

At Woodbridge Comfort Care Dental, we work with a specialist who will place the physical implant screw into a patient’s jaw, and then we take care of the “tooth” piece of the implant to make sure it fits a patient’s mouth and color matches.

Getting an Assessment

Before one of our dentists at Woodbridge Comfort Dental Care in Woodbridge, VA, can replace your teeth, they will develop a treatment plan. First, they will assess your mouth and jaw to find out if there is enough bone to support implants. If you’re losing your teeth due to decay, the dentist will make sure the damage hasn’t eaten away at the jawbone too.

If there is too much bone missing, then the jaw may not be able to support the implants, and a bone graft may be necessary. However, if your bone is in good shape, then the dentist will move forward by arranging for implants to be put into your jaw.

Installing the Implant

Dental implants have three pieces:

  • Titanium posts
  • Abutments
  • Crowns

Our dentist will start the implants by placing the posts or “roots” of the implants. It is a surgical procedure, so you will be under anesthesia. While under anesthesia, the dentist will open the gum to expose the jawbone. Then, your dentist will drill into the bone to place the posts, which look like screws.

Placing the Abutments

Next, the flap of the gum goes back over the posts to allow them to integrate with the jawbone for about three to six months. Once the jawbone supports them, our dentist will place the abutments onto the posts.

Placing the abutments may require extra surgery to expose the posts and place the abutments onto them. Then, the gum goes around the abutments, which requires about two weeks of healing time.

Placing the Crowns

After allowing the gum to heal, the customized crowns get attached to the abutments. They can be removable for cleanings, or you may choose to have them fixed in place, in which our dentist will cement them in place.

Finally, with the implants in place, our dentist in Woodbridge, VA, will provide you with aftercare instructions, such as what to eat and how to take care of your replacement teeth. After finishing the implant procedures, you will have new beautiful teeth to show off when you smile.
