What to expect during your root canal
Getting a root canal is closer to having a filling placed than most people expect. We start by examining the tooth and taking an X-ray to see what is happening below the surface, then walk you through the plan before anything begins.
- Numbing comes first: We fully numb the tooth with local anesthetic so you stay comfortable from start to finish.
- Clearing the infection: Using rotary instruments, we remove the infected pulp, then clean and shape the narrow canals inside the root.
- Sealing it up: We fill and seal the cleaned space to keep bacteria out, then place a temporary or permanent filling on top.
If sitting in the chair makes you tense, we offer sedation options, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation, alongside the standard local anesthetic. We settle on the right plan for your tooth at your evaluation.
Recovery and getting back to normal
Most people return to work or their usual routine the day after a root canal. The treated tooth can feel tender for a few days, especially when you bite down, and an over-the-counter pain reliever usually handles it.
- Favor the other side: Chew away from the treated tooth until any permanent restoration is in place.
- Keep brushing and flossing: Clean the area gently, the same as the rest of your teeth.
- Call if pain climbs: Soreness should fade a little each day. If it grows instead, let us know.
Because a treated tooth can lose some of its strength, we often cap it with a dental crown once it has healed, which restores full bite strength for everyday chewing.
